Continuing Education Hours:
All agents with a Life/Health license ONLY, must complete 24 hrs of continuing education including 4 hrs of ethics, every two years.
All agents with a Life/Health and Fire/Casualty license must complete 25 hrs of continuing education including 4 hrs of ethics, for the first four years of licensure on an annual basis. Thereafter, the agent is required to complete 24 hrs of continuing education including 4 hrs of ethics, every two years.
All agents with a Fire/Casualty license ONLY, must complete 25 hrs of continuing education including 4 hrs of ethics, for the first four years of licensure on an annual basis. Thereafter, the agent is required to complete 24 hrs of continuing education including 4 hrs of ethics, every two years.
All Personal Lines or Limited Lines Automobile Insurance agents are required to complete 20 hrs of continuing education including 2 hrs of ethics, every two years.
All Independent and Public Adjusters are required to complete 24 hrs of continuing education, every two years.
Additional Training Requirements:
NFIP Flood Training: All producers who sell flood insurance must complete a one-time 3 hr flood training course.
LTC: All agents prior to selling LTC insurance products in California must complete a one-time 8 hr training course. Agents who are licensed less than 4 years must complete 8 hrs of ongoing training every year thereafter, for the first four years of licensure. Completing Agents licensed more than 4 years must complete 8 hours of ongoing training every two years, thereafter.
LTCP: All agents prior to selling LTCP insurance products in California, must complete a one-time 16 hr training course, of which 8 hrs must be taken in the classroom and the remaining 8 hrs may be taken via self-study. After completing the 16 hr LTCP training requirement, agents who are licensed less than 4 years will be required to complete 8 hrs of classroom training every year thereafter, for the first 4 years of licensure. Agents licensed more than 4 years will be required to complete 8 hrs of classroom training every two years, thereafter.
Homeowner's Insurance: All resident Fire/Casualty and Personal Line brokers who negotiate or sell homeowners' insurance will be required to complete a one-time 3-hour homeowners' insurance valuation training.
Annuities: All agents who wish to sell solicit or negociate long term care insurance must complete a one-time 8 hrs training course, followed by 4 hrs of ongoing training every two years, thereafter.
Types of Courses Accepted for CE Credit:
Self-Study (not for LTC training)
Classroom
Carryover Requirements:
Agents are allowed to carryover credits to the next, except for ethics credits.
Course Repetition:
A course may not be taken more than once within the compliance period.
Exemptions:
Beginning January 01, 1998, any person who is at 70 years of age or older and has 30 continuous years as a licensee in good standing in the State of California will be considered exempt from the continuing education.
Non-Resident Requirements:
Nonresident agents selling annuities, LTC, LTC partnership, or flood products are required to complete the same special training/education requirements as resident agents.
License Renewal Date:
Independent and Public Adjusters must renew their license by 5/31 of even years.
Personal Lines agents must renew their license by 12/31, biennially.
Life/Health, Fire/Casualty and Limited Lines License agents must renew their license by the last day of the month every two years based on the license issuance month.
Continuing Education Compliance Date:
