Continuing Education Hours
All resident licensees with a Life/Health or Property/Casualty license are required to complete 10 hrs of continuing education, every two years.
All resident licensees with a Life/Health and Property/Casualty license are required to complete 20 hrs of continuing education, every two years.
All resident licensees with a Crop/Hail license are required to complete 4 hrs of continuing education, every two years.
All resident licensees with a Crop/Hail and Property/Casualty or Life/Health license are required to complete 10 hrs of continuing education, every two years. Each licensee is requried to complete 2 hrs of Crop/Hail coursework and 8 hrs of Life/Health or Property/Casualty coursework.
All resident licensees with a Crop/Hail, Property/Casualty and Life/Health license are required to complete 20 hrs of continuing education, every two years. Each licensee is requried to complete 2 hrs of Crop/Hail coursework and the remaining hours should be divided up between Life/Health and Property/Casualty coursework.
All resident licensees with a Farm Mutual license are required to complete 10 hrs of continuing education every two years.
All resident licensees with a Personal Lines license are required to complete 10 hrs of continuing education in Property/Casualty coursework every two years.
Continuing Education Compliance Date
Continuing Education and license renewal are due by 4/30 of even-numbered years.

Course Subject Requirements
- Credit hours must cover lines in which licensed.
- Licensees who have both a Property/Casualty and Life/Health license must take at least 40% of their coursework in each line.
- No more than 50% of the required continuing hours may be taken in company sponsored courses.
Other Training Requirements
-NFIP Flood Training: All licensees who currently sell or may sell flood insurance through the NFIP must complete a one-time 3 hr NFIP Flood training course.
-LTC/P: All licensees are requied to complete a one-time 8 hr training course on long term care insurance and policies, followed by 4 hours of ongoing training every two years, theraefter. At least 2 hrs must cover South Dakota Medicaid laws.
Carryover Requirements
Not Permitted
Final Exam
Self-study courses must have a completion exam.
Course Repetition
Licensees are not allowed to repeat courses within a two year period.
Exemptions
(1) A licensee holding a limited license to sell only credit life and credit health insurance;
(2) A licensee outside the United States or its territories;
(3) A licensee who is a resident attorney licensed to practice law in the state;
(4) A licensee who is a transportation ticket producer of common carriers holding a limited license to sell only travel accident and baggage insurance;
(5) A licensee who is an employee of a trade association holding a limited license to sell only surety bonds to its association members;
(6) A licensee who has reached the age of 65 prior to July 1, 2006 and has been licensed for at least 10 years or who have reached 65 after July 1, 2006 and have been licensed for at least 10 years and who no longer sell, solicit or negotiate insurance.
(7) A licensee who is licensed to sell only bail bonds.
The producer must notify the Division office in writing if he/she falls under one of the exempt categories.
Nonresidents Requirements
Non-residents are exempt from the continuing education requirement, if they satisfy their continuing education requirement in their home state.
